History of Déolen

Once upon a time, a copper cable laid under the Atlantic Ocean revolutionized the transmission of information and communication between Europe and America. Before the arrival of the telephone and the Internet, the Déolen cable station in France became an important aspect of the history of international communication for several decades. During a century (1869-1962), in the small cove of Déolen, near Brest, two submarine telegraph wires permitted transatlantic communications between Europe, America and Africa. In 1898 French and American engineers even laid a cable directly from Déolen to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, which was extended to New York in 1899. It was the longest cable ever laid at that time (6000 kilometers, around 3,173 nautical miles). The Déolen cable station represents one of those unknown forward leaps that few people know about.

In 1869, The telegraph cable was laid connecting Le Minou with Duxbury (Massachusetts), establishing nearly instantaneous communication between the Old world and the New.
